The UK's first open access hydrogen vehicle refuelling station has been officially opened at Honda's manufacturing facility in Swindon. Built and operated by industrial gases company BOC, a member of The Linde Group, the venture is the result of a partnership between Honda, BOC and economic development company Forward Swindon.

Based on the grounds of Honda of the UK Manufacturing in Swindon, the station aims to encourage the development of both hydrogen-powered vehicles - such as the Honda FCX Clarity fuel cell car - and the refuelling infrastructure to support them.

It also creates a strategic link half way along the M4 between London and Swansea. As a fully operational, commercial-scale station using tested technology, it is a solution that can be replicated across the country and so create the essential network necessary for the widespread uptake of hydrogen-powered transport.

It is the intention of Honda of the UK Manufacturing Ltd (HUM) to return to their normal daily production plan during September. This follows the period of parts supply interruption and reduced production levels following the earthquake and tsunami in Japan. Associates and suppliers have all made tremendous efforts during this period to make this recovery possible.

With parts supply from Japan improving significantly, HUM will now plan production for the remainder of the year to recover volume and quickly respond to customers' requirements.

This announcement coincides with the release of JD Power's annual customer satisfaction survey, which has awarded the Swindon-built Jazz first place in the supermini sector for the eighth year running. Such an accolade, voted by customers, recognises the high standard of work undertaken by our associates at HUM.

UK Jazz rolls off production line

Thursday, 8 October 2009

The first British-built Honda jazz has rolled off the production line in Swindon.

European production of the Jazz has shifted from Japan to the UK as Honda aims to produce particular models in the continent where they are most popular. More than 70,000 Jazz cars are sold in Europe each year.

David Hodgetts, Director of Honda of the UK Manufacturing in Swindon, said:

We see this third model as a wonderful opportunity in the current climate and we're extremely proud to be building the Jazz here in Swindon. The car is incredibly popular with customers, and it has won countless awards for quality and reliability. Shifting production to the UK is a real vote of confidence in all our Associates here in Swindon, and recognition of the high standards which we have been able to achieve at the plant.

In addition to the British-built Civic and CR-V models Honda plans to produce 20,000 Jazz units to the end of March 2010, with 75 per cent of these to be sold in the UK.
