Honda Civic Type R Wins What Car? Reader Award!

We're delighted to report that Honda's next-generation Civic Type R has won the coveted What Car? reader award and has been named as the most eagerly anticipated car launch of 2017.

Demonstrating its huge popularity, the Type R took almost half of the votes and clinched the top spot in the poll compiled by What Car? experts and voted for by the readers.

Held in association with Warranty Direct and widely acknowledged as the 'Oscars' of the car industry, the annual What Car? Car of the Year Awards are given only to the cars that set the highest standards in their class each year.

Honda launches Civic Type R Black Edition

Commemorating the last of the current Civic Type R to come off the production line, the Black Edition is limited to the last 100 cars and Honda is expecting it to become a true collector's item, and we now have one here at Trident Honda.

The Civic Type R Black Edition features a predominantly black interior with red accents which add to the premium cabin feel, while the exterior is differentiated from the standard version by red rear wing end plates on the spoiler.

Production of the current Type R at Honda of the UK Manufacturing in Swindon is now finished and the factory is gearing up for the next generation Civic plus the new Civic Type R version, which is expected to hit retail forecourts in the latter half of this year.

A new interactive online film from Honda was launched today, bringing to life the brand's 'other side' ahead of the hotly-anticipated launch of the new Civic Type R in 2015.

Honda is renowned for its reputation of engineering excellence, technology and reliability. But it's the brand's 'other side', born from a racing heritage and thirst for innovation, which this campaign heroes.

During 2015 Honda will launch the all-new Civic Type R - promising to be the most extreme and high-performing model to wear the famous 'Red H' badge - perfectly embodying this other side of the marque. As the film asserts, Type R is the wild child alter-ego of the Civic hatchback that customers know and trust.

New Civic Type-R at Nurburgring

Honda has revealed that the hotly anticipated new Civic Type-R will be powered by a direct injection turbocharged 2-litre engine and will deliver at least 280 PS. The car has already been put through its paces by Honda's WTCC driver Gabriele Tarquini and a film demonstrating its storming performance and handling on the Nurburgring can be viewed at:


Last year Honda confirmed ambitions for the Civic Type-R to become the fastest front wheel drive car around the infamous Nurburgring circuit in Germany. The car still faces a further two years of development before going on sale in 2015; however, on-track testing has already begun. Speaking at the Frankfurt Motor Show Manabu Nishimae, President, Honda Motor Europe, added:

We have recently spent a week at the Nurburgring, carrying out extensive testing and we are on target, and have already set a time approaching the lap record.

Brit-built Civic Type-R set for Japan

Honda Civic Type Rs are to be exported from the UK to Japan from next year. The three-door will be called the Type-R Euro to distinguish it from the four-door Type-R Civics on sale in Japan and will be sold in limited numbers.

The cars are built at Honda's plant in Swindon.

A Honda spokesman said:

It is another outlet for Swindon and goes some way to securing the future of the plant,

The 198bhp Type-R Euro will have the same specification as the British version and will slot beneath the 222bhp four-door in Japan.
